To promote healthy diets and reduce the consumption of products harmful to health by taxing unhealthy foods and subsidising healthier options. By imposing targeted taxes on unhealthy products including foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, the government aims to reduce their consumption, while encouraging manufacturers to reformulate their products to meet improved nutritional standards.
Revenue from taxes can be ring-fenced to support public interventions. There is also a great need for the government to make available financial incentives for the production, distribution, and retail of nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy alternatives.
